From Texas to Falcarragh to work with young musicians

A Belfast-based singer and musician who’s featured as ‘Hot for 2023’ in ‘Hot Press’ is lined up to work with up-and-coming young Donegal musicians on Saturday.

Cheylene Murphy, one half of art-pop duo Beauty Sleep, is working as a mentor at the PCC Soundwaves II day in PCC An Fál Carrach.

Last year Beauty Sleep featured at the prestigious South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin, Texas, the largest of its kind in the world.

Their single ‘Go’ was shortlisted for best single at the NI Music Prize 2022.

Working with Cheylene for the day at PCC will be drummer and violinist Seamus Devenny, one of Donegal’s best-known professional musicians.

PCC Soundwaves II is open to all musicians and singers aged 12-18. It’s organised by the Donegal Music Education Partnership (DMEP), the music arm of the Donegal Education and Training Board.

DMEP manager Martin McGinley said that it’s a great opportunity for talented local musicians to work with professionals.

“It’s brilliant to have Cheylene coming along from the Hot Press list of acts to watch out for in 2023. It would be great to see more Donegal singers and musicians on lists like that. Events like PCC Soundwaves II are important in developing local talent.”

Anyone interested in taking part in PCC Soundwaves II can register at dmep.ie The event is subsidised by the DMEP and the fee for the day is €20.

Martin said that the young musicians involved will spend the day working together to create a new song or two, which will be recorded in the evening.

“We’ve got the makings of interesting groups from those already signed up,” he said. “So far we’ve got singers, guitarists, at least one bass guitarist, a drummer, a violinist and a rapper so it’s looking promising!”

PCC Soundwaves II is the follow-up to the first PCC Soundwaves in December 2021.

For those interested in becoming the next ‘Murder Capital’, music tuition is available at the Atlantic School of Rock at PCC on Tuesday evenings, with Tine Verbeke on voice (also on Thursday evenings), Declan McClafferty on guitar and Jim Maley on piano.
