A FUNDRAISER in memory of a young Donegal town man who died by suicide has raised more than €14,000 to date.
On December 5, last year, suicide stole the precious life of popular, fun loving and much-loved Aaron Scott (26).
Aaron had not long returned home from Canada when he died tragically.
Those who knew the young man would say he was best described as a ‘true gent’.
He always had time for everyone, he was a devoted family man and the best friend anyone could ever wish to have.
On Friday May 10, a table quiz was held in Dom’s Pier 1, Donegal town in memory of Aaron and to raise money and awareness of Living Links, a charity which provides support to people bereaved by suicide all over the county.
Aaron’s friends who had organised the event couldn’t believe the massive turnout with more than 70 teams taking part on the night, a testament to the young man’s popularity.
Prizes had been generously donated by local businesses.
Many more provided raffle prizes, donations and support – too many to mention here – but the organisers sincere thanks goes out to each and every one of them.
As well as the table quiz, Aaron’s Friends set up a system to accept donations online while the Donegal town branch of Lidl were massively involved in all the fund-raising activities.
Some of Aaron’s friends even dressed up in drag to take part in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon in Dublin on June 3, raising even more for Living Links in the process.
The total raised for Living Links to date stands at an amazing €14,873.
Aaron’s friends will be meeting with representatives from the Donegal branch of Living Links to discuss how this money can be spent in the local area to greatest benefit.
Aaron’s sister Donna Maskery said: “Aaron was the best type of person you could imagine.
“We all miss him so much and always will. Aaron’s friends put so much energy into the fund-raising and everyone pulled together. Siobhan Waters, Paul Gerard Duncan and John O’Sullivan have been really great and I think it helps us all working on something positive together. We all need to take the time to talk. If someone is important to you, let them know.”
Aaron’s friends would like to say a massive thanks to everyone for their support.
Living links will be holding an information event in Donegal Town on Sunday, September 15, which will aim to address some of the delicate and complex issues surrounding suicide and mental health.
