A LETTERKENNY councillor has called for a “fresh look” into how parking fine appeals are handled in the town.
Cllr Ciaran Brogan said that he had not heard of one person winning an appeal for a parking fine, and claimed that the current system was being “run a bit like a secret service since the Town Council was abolished.”
Speaking at the monthly meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, he said that Letterkenny had always prided itself in being a town to do business in and for being friendly, and he wanted to see this continue.
However, he expressed concern that people were not being listened to when they had appealed a parking fine.
He also claimed that there are “patterns” with a lot of tickets being given out in some areas and not in others.
Proposing a motion that a workshop be held to discuss matters, he said they need to have a “re-set button.”
Seconding the motion, Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly claimed there “is no leeway or common sense” at the moment in relation to appeals.
In an official response to the motion, members were informed that the council’s parking section is currently reviewing paid parking operations across the whole county, and it is intended to hold workshops in all municipal districts in the coming months.
A report will be presented to councillors at these workshops providing information on how paid parking operations are managed in Donegal and there will also be recommendations on changes and improvements can be made to the service over the coming months and years.
Cllr Brogan was also told that “at these workshops members can raise other items under any other business.”
