Fresh Covid-19 warning amid rise of new variant

The public is being urged to be vigilant in the wake of rising Covid-19 infections and a new variant.

The Department of Public Health, HSE West and North West, are jointly encouraging the public to be aware of an increase of Covid-19 infections in the community.

There is a new Covid-19 variant (JN.1) circulating in Ireland. This new variant in the community has resulted in an increase in outbreaks in nursing homes, hospitals and other healthcare settings putting vulnerable patients at risk of infection.

Ongoing awareness of symptoms of Covid-19 and taking steps to prevent the spread in both the community and in healthcare settings remain important to protect those most vulnerable.

If you have any symptoms of Covid-19 and feel unwell, you should: Stay at home until 48 hours after your symptoms are mostly or fully gone; avoid contact with other people, especially people at higher risk from Covid-19;
you do not need a Covid-19 test unless a GP or health professional tells you to.

If you choose to do one, there is different advice to follow if you have a positive Covid-19 test.

Dr Áine McNamara, AreaDirector of Public Health, Department of Public Health HSE West and North West, said: “We are reminding everyone of the importance of taking steps to prevent the spread of serious illness from Covid-19, particularly for those most vulnerable in our community.

“Avoid visiting those in healthcare settings such as hospitals and nursing homes if you are experiencing Covid-19 symptoms.”

To prevent the spread of Covid-19 you should, wash your hands properly and often; cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve – put used tissues into a bin and wash your hands; let fresh air into your home by
opening windows, doors and air vents as much as possible and clean objects and surfaces that other people touch.
