FREEZING temperatures brought most parts of the county to a standstill in recent days.
With temperatures plummeting as low as -6 degrees in some parts of Donegal, the icy conditions resulted in significant disruption across various sectors including education, transport and local and sporting events.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, many schools across the county were forced to close due to the extreme weather conditions.
As roads became treacherously icy and temperatures remained well below freezing, many schools decided it was too unsafe for children and staff to travel and worked swiftly to inform parents of the closures.
And with the freezing temperatures looking like they are here to stay, schools are still closely monitoring the situation and making decisions on a day-to-day basis.
The icy weather also caused widespread disruption to school transport.
A number of school bus services were cancelled as drivers and operators faced challenges navigating icy roads.
In addition to the impact on schools and transport, many community events across Donegal were also cancelled.
The unusually low temperatures have also resulted in dangerous conditions for motorists.
Ice-covered roads have led to multiple minor collisions and local authorities have urged drivers to take extreme caution when traveling.
Looking ahead, more cold weather is expected over the next few days.
Tonight will start off dry and very cold with severe frost and freezing fog developing with lowest temperatures of -7 to -2 degrees, coldest early in the night.
On Friday morning, rain, sleet and snow will turn mostly to rain or sleet by the afternoon with highest afternoon temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees.
Friday night will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle.
It won’t be as cold as previous nights with lowest temperatures of 0 to 5 degrees.
On Saturday morning, outbreaks of rain will continue and then gradually clear through the afternoon, with highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees.
Saturday night will be mainly dry with lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees.
