BUNCRANA councillor Joy Beard has confirmed that she will not support any proposal to remove the free 30-minutes parking on the town’s Main Street.
Recent media reports have referred to a county-wide review of parking charges.
Cllr Beard has clarified that while a review has been referenced, it has not yet commenced and no date has been set for it to begin.
“This issue has arisen because parking systems across towns in Donegal operate differently, and there are inconsistencies in how charges apply,” Cllr Beard said.
“In addition, Buncrana’s parking account is currently operating at a loss.
“While all income generated from parking is ring-fenced for Buncrana, the scheme is not presently covering its costs, and that financial position cannot continue indefinitely.”
Cllr Beard said she will not support the removal of the free 30-minutes parking in Buncrana.
She confirmed that she has been engaging directly with local businesses on the issue.
“I have spoken with traders and business owners, and they are very clear that the free half hour supports footfall, short visits and town centre activity,” she said.
“It works, and it benefits local trade.”
She also confirmed that Buncrana councillors discussed the matter prior to Christmas and were aligned in their position that the free half hour must remain.
“Any future review must carefully consider Buncrana’s specific circumstances,” Cllr Beard said.
“Removing a measure that supports our town centre would be the wrong approach.”
While no consultation has yet begun, Cllr Beard said she would encourage full engagement when the time comes.
“When a consultation process does open, I would strongly encourage members of the public and the business community to participate and make their views known,” she said.
“Buncrana’s voice must be heard clearly.”
Cllr Beard reaffirmed her position.
“The free 30-minutes parking on Main Street is an important support for our town,” she said.
“I will continue to advocate strongly to ensure it remains in place.”
