Frances Browne Literary Festival returns to Ballybofey

By Rebecca Crockett

THE Frances Browne Literary Festival returns this week for its annual celebration of Ulster’s “Blind Poetess” from October 10th to 13th.

Taking place across venues in Ballybofey and Stranorlar, the programme is an eclectic mix of theatre, music, poetry, painting, and panel discussions.

Celine McGlynn, Chairperson of the festival committee, said: “We are delighted to welcome such a diverse range of talents to this year’s festival, from acclaimed scholars like Nesa O’Mahony and Professor McLean to rising stars like Muireann Bradley.

“This event is about celebrating the rich literary and cultural heritage of our region while creating new connections through music, poetry, and storytelling.”

The festival’s broad scope represents Browne’s prolific work that defied both genre and societal conventions. The 19th Century poet championed anti-war, anti-slavery, and anti-imperialist attitudes in her writing which spanned three collections of poems, three three-volume novels, and countless short stories and essays.

Although her stardom has waned over the years, the festival hopes to reignite the next generation’s interest in her work through family events. On Sunday a free children’s fun day comes to The BASE Enterprise Centre, with plenty of kite-making, face-painting, and storytelling to inspire the little ones.

The festival is also unique as it features all three of Ireland’s traditional languages, Irish, English, and Ulster Scots. Their Irish language programme features pop-up speaking sessions, a pop-up poetry night, and a Gaeilge/Gàidhlig concert which kicks off night-time events.

Celine McGlynn said: “If you’ve never attended the festival before, this is the perfect year to start. With unique opportunities to hear emerging talents and explore the history, and culture of our region.

“It’s more than just a festival—it’s a chance to connect with the creative spirit of East Donegal, discover new perspectives, and be part of a vibrant community celebration.”
