Fr Kelly to brave the shave after 30 years

FR Eamonn Kelly, who has not shaved his beard in over 30 years, is going under the blade for a special cause.

Fr Kelly of Raphoe, Convoy and Drumkeen Parish has not used a razor himself since the day before Donegal won their first All-Ireland title in September 1992, and he has finally agreed to shave his famous beard.

However, he feels that he would not be able to safely and correctly remove the beard himself so rather than delay the shave, his friends have organised others to help remove the growth and everyone is invited to help them achieve their long-time longed-for-goal: a clean face.

The goal will be reached to the benefit of a cause close to his heart – Mary’s Meals. A GoFundMe page was launched this week and has already raised over €1,000.

A spokesperson for Mary’s Meals said, “After weeks and months of pleading and appealing from family and friends, Fr. Eamonn Kelly has finally agreed to get his beard shaved.

“In the hearts of Fr Kelly and his friends are the children waiting to receive a meal each day with Mary’s Meals.

“So putting it all together, everyone is invited to help out and to witness the beard being removed on Saturday, October 7 at the Diamond, Raphoe, Donegal at 2pm.

“It will be a time of fun and laughter, a time of joy and thrill, a time of helping feed more children.

“During this time Mary’s Meals hope to feed 200 children for a full school year with Mary’s Meals.

“To feed one child costs €22 per school year.”
