ACKNOWLEDGING that the four lane carriageway in Letterkenny is now more or less completed, Cllr Donal Coyle has called on the council to contact Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to install reflectors on the central divide of the road.
“It is a very good job and the traffic lights are working well. There were four lanes there previously and there are still four lanes which are narrower than before because of that big concrete divide in the centre of the road. Why the need for that? Would an ordinary barrier not have served the same purpose leaving the lanes wider?” said Cllr Coyle.
“On dark winter nights going out the road you cannot see the divider and people have been on to me about it. Reflectors which you have on barriers would be a big help.”
Roads Engineer with Donegal County Council, David McIlwaine responded that the road was subject to ongoing review.
He acknowledged that the traffic lights for the Cullion Road section had been raised by a number of members as taking too long to change.
Cllr Coyle pointed out that people had complained to him they were waiting up to 12 minutes for the lights to change.
“People need to go all the way up to the white line to trigger for the lights to change,” he explained.
Mr McIlwaine stated in his written response that “significant improvements to the N56 Four Lane road were completed late last year with the road now fully open and operational to all road users. These changes include a new posted speed limit of 60km/hr, with supporting measures to reflect an urban road such as, road/street lighting. Changes to the four-lane will be subject to ongoing review and monitoring to ensure the safe and effective operation.”
