THE design of the four-lane road into Letterkenny and its lack of room for emergency services came in for discussion at Tuesday’s Letterkenny/Milford Municipal District meeting – the last before the June 7 local elections.
Cathaoirleach Kevin Bradley called on the council to engage with the council’s roads section with a view to introducing an emergency escape route as a matter of urgency.
“If something happened out that road it would be difficult for the emergency services to get in or out,” he said.
Seconding the motion Cllr Ciaran Brogan told members it was something that “was flagged up” at the time it was designed and we were told the consultation was done.
“It is an example of a desk-top exercise and there is no call for this big concrete barrier up the middle. There is an acknowledgement from the people who designed it that it is not right and they are looking at measures for the ambulance service,” he said.
In response to Cllr Bradley’s motion the executive responded: “The issue of access and egress to and from Letterkenny along the four-lane road was discussed at the recent meeting of the Joint Policing Committee and at a number of other fora.
“Donegal County Council will engage further with the emergency services to examine the issue.”
