Sonas Youth Club members take a break.
SONAS Youth Club has just successfully completed its summer programme of 2015 with members participating in a whole range of activities.
As part of the programme, which started June, the members visited W5 Belfast, Foylehov Activity Centre, Dunlewey Centre Gweedore, Waterworld Bundoran, Kayaking with Inishowen Adventures, Creggan Country Park, Arena 7, Aura Centre, Belfast Zoo, Todds Leap, Barry’s amusements, O’Flaherty’s Gym, Buncrana Cinema and Fit Hub Letterkenny. Having launched Sonas Youth Club in October of 2012, the club has expanded from seven young members to now 22 young people with limited resources and funding.
Liam Gill, Youth Co-ordinator, said: “Sonas Youth Club has been successful in many ways. By letting young people with autism re-engage in a youth led setting and by encouraging participation, we have also raised awareness, fund-raising, and so on. All our youth workers are fully trained on autism, learning needs, social interactions. The young people have great difficulty with this. We strive to encourage as much interaction as possible between the young people and the youth workers.”
Sonas Youth Club will take part in a charity climb of Errigal this Sunday, August 23, 2015 from 2pm, everyone is welcome to join in or call our contact number for more information. If you have a son or daughter with autism aged 11+ and would like more information on how to join Sonas Youth club either call 0863571375 or e-mail sonasyc@hotmail.com for further information.
“We are always looking for new volunteers also, aged 18+, if you could spare 2 hours a week, we would like to hear from you, volunteering with Sonas is very rewarding and fun. We would like to thank our young people their parents, our committed and dedicated volunteers and for everyone who supports our group,” said Liam.
