By Louise Doyle

PLANS could be afoot to change a former Letterkenny café into apartments.

A planning site notice has appeared on the property of the former ‘Chillout Café’ on Lower Main Street, which closed its doors at Christmas.

According to the notice, Brendan McGettigan is applying to Donegal County Council for planning permission for a change of use from a café to two one-bedroom apartments on ground floor level. The proposed development also comprises all associated site works at 83 Lower Main Street, Letterkenny.

The planning notice has been signed by MH Associates, Letterkenny, and was erected on April 17, 2025. The planning application may be inspected at the offices of the planning authority during its opening hours, the planning site notice states.

In November, 2023 Chillout had been the premises for a very successful ‘pop up’ recovery café for those in recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction, providing a safe and comfortable space for people to meet and have a chat.

The ‘3C’s Café (coffee, courage and chat) was an initiative of Alcohol Forum Ireland in Letterkenny. The pop up café ran successfully for a number of months.

The national charity works with people in recovery who have raised the lack of alcohol free social spaces in the evening as a challenge for many, particularly those navigating early recovery.
