Mr Ó Dochartaigh represented Fine Gael before standing as an independent candidate in 2009 local election, where he polled over 1,470 first preference votes.

In the preceding local election in 2014 he ran again as an independent candidate, however he was unsuccessful in retaining his seat.

In 2014 the Standards in Public Office Commission made a damning finding in its published investigation into double expenses claims, revealing the former Donegal County Councillor acted ‘recklessly’ by claiming double expenses.
