Fond memories of Eddie’s Arcade

A photograph carried in a recent Monday edition of the Donegal News featuring a newly opened take-away on Upper Main Street in Letterkenny has prompted quite the reaction.

In his caption, our photographer Brian McDaid reminded readers of the old ‘Eddie’s Arcade’, a popular cafe in the town back in the 1970s and ‘80s. It was located in the same premises as the new take-away.

‘Eddie’s Arcade’ was owned by the late Eddie Deery who also owned the The Centre Spot Cafe at Market Square. The arcade was the in-place in its day – a place to get a burger in the freshest of baps, soup, a sandwich or a pot of tea.

Brian has since received some lovely old photos of Eddie’s Arcade, sent on by Eddie’s great-grandniece, Amy.

No doubt the old photos will bring back some happy memories for those of a certain vintage.

You can also see the tea pot on the single ring and the toaster that helped make Eddie’s burgers taste so good.
