THE installation of floodlights at the Donegal GAA Training Centre in Convoy got underway this week.
Floodlights are being erected on the two pitches at the centre with the work being carried out by McSherry’s Lighting, the Cork-based company who won the tender for the project.
At Monday night’s county committee meeting, Donegal Treasurer Cieran Kelly confirmed that a payment of €136,000 would be made this week.
McSherry’s include Morton Stadium, Aviva Stadium and Semple Stadium in their portfolio.
The work was expected to take around ten days from its commencement.
Last week, the pitches – which have both been used extensively over the winter – were sprayed, verti drained and sanded.
The installation of the lights is the latest phase in the development at the centre with Donegal officials hoping to add a clubhouse building to include dressing rooms as well as the provision of a stand at one of the pitches.
DRUMBOE
In his report to Monday’s meeting the Development Officer, Michael McMenamin confirmed the Board’s intention to sell the clubhouse building at the training ground in Drumboe.
The Board no longer leases the field in Drumboe, but the clubhouse, built by Donegal GAA in the mid-1990s, is owned by the County Board. As it is landlocked with no exit onto the public road, it is the Board’s intention to see planning permission to request an exit in order to make the property sellable.
Mr McMenamin said: “We do have road frontage of approx 23 metres which includes an ESB pole carrying a transformer. In order to make the property sellable and to give it some value it has been decided to seek planning permission for change of use and to request new exit onto the public road.”
Meanwhile, the Development Officer has outlined two projects in Sean MacCumhaill Park, Ballybofey which are in need of addressing: The untreated corrosion on the steel in the stand; and the lack of toilets serving the terraced areas.
Donegal officials now intend to have planning permission in place in order to apply for funding through the next Sports Capital programme.
