Flooding issues on busy road ‘a hazard for motorists’

URGENT calls have been made to address flooding on a section of the N15 between Liscooley and Castlefin after a councillor warned it is an ‘accident waiting to happen’.

The stretch of road, which is situated at Tinney’s Gatehouse, is often forced to narrow to a single lane after heavy rainfall due to flooding.

Speaking at Thursday’s Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District meeting, Cllr Gary Doherty expressed concern that a serious collision could occur if repairs to the road aren’t made a priority.

“It is a real hazard for motorists and it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident there,” Cllr Doherty said.

“If you’re driving in the left-hand lane from Liscooley to Castlefin and you come upon that big pool of water, there is nothing else you can do only hit the brakes hard.

“There is no notice; you don’t see it coming, especially in the dark.

“You either have to brake hard or go out into the opposite lane.

“Obviously that presents a huge hazard for motorists and I am very fearful that there will be a serious collision at that location.”

Although drainage works were previously carried out on this section of road, it has deteriorated over time due to repeated flooding.

Cllr Doherty insists the issue must be resolved immediately to ensure motorists’ safety.

“This is a real accident waiting to happen,” he said.

“We need to make that a priority.”
