Flair Apparent: Keeping on top of dry skin during winter

Part of my reason for wanting to write this column was to learn a bit more about makeup and how to use it.

I thought I could learn while doing, and share what I learn.

I want to be a bit more adventurous with my makeup looks so of late I’ve been having fun experimenting.

Tiktok and Instagram have been my main sources of inspiration.

I’ve learned that copying looks from people online works when you have similar colouring and face shape, and is an absolute comedic disaster when you don’t!

Since wearing more makeup I’ve noticed patches of dry skin emerging through my foundation.

I’ve tried moisturising and priming before foundation, but to no avail.

It’s common in winter months for people to experience extra dry, or flaky skin.

But there are things you and I can do to help keep our skin supple and radiant in the winter months.

Make toning and moisturising part of your daily routine

This is especially important after you shower or wash your face.

Applying a toner first will help maintain the acid mantle on your face (which sounds bad but is actually good).

Use sunscreen

Yes, even in winter those UV rays are still around and they will deplete the moisture on your face, and cause damage.

Use a good quality night cream

Anything with ‘night cream’ in the title should be rich enough to use but test a little before buying.

Because my skin is very dry I’ve started using L’Occitane’s Ultra Rich Comforting Face Cream as it has 25% Shea Butter in it.

Shea Butter is an occlusive ingredient which means that it locks the moisture into your skin.

Other occlusive ingredients are: rosehip oil, cocoa butter and jojoba oil.

Use a gentle cleanser

Dry skin tends to be sensitive skin, so in the winter months you might not be able to use your usual products.

This applies to serums as well. Look for products that can be used on sensitive skin instead.

Avoid exfoliants or scrubs until your skin is back to normal

Scrubs can be very harsh on your skin and the last thing you want is to make your skin worse.

Consider buying a silk pillowcase

Kathleen Woods from Donegal-based The Silk Label says, “Silk will not absorb moisture from your face, which allows your expensive moisturisers/serums/creams to work more efficiently and leaves your skin hydrated.”

Keep well hydrated

Consider taking some omega 3 fatty acid supplements (or even better – add more omega-rich food to your diet). Oily fish are one of the best sources of omega 3 fatty acids.

I’ve started changing my skincare routine to combat the harsh effect of winter on my poor skin, and I’ve already noticed a big difference.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks for my adventures in makeup! As always you can find me on all social media platforms as @TarynDeVere.
