Fixtures row in Donegal

A ROW over club fixtures is brewing a storm in Donegal.

As revealed by the Donegal News this morning, the county senior football team’s management and players have been angered by the scheduling of some of the All-County Football League games this weekend.

Two games in Division 1 have been pencilled in for tomorrow night, Saturday, with Kilcar scheduled to host Malin and Killybegs to welcome Gaoth Dobhair to Fintra.

For the last number of weeks, the county senior team has trained on Saturdays, with Jim McGuinness holding on those days what he has called ‘tactical’ sessions with his players.

At the outset of the season, the county management had asked that the games involving the members of the county panel be put down to take place on the same day.

This season, it has been the norm for Division 3 and Division 4 games to be played on Saturdays with Divisions 1 and 2 mainly on Sundays. David Walsh, who plays for Naomh Brid in Division 3, is the only member of the current county panel who is with a club outside of the top two divisions.

This morning, Donegal star Eamon McGee, who plays for Gaoth Dobhair, tweeted his anger at the situation, when he said that those setting fixtures had made a ‘hash of things’. His tweet has since been removed.

Negotiations between the management, the relevant clubs and the Competitions Controls Committee are believed to be teasing out the possibility of putting tomorrow night’s games back, but it seems unlikely that the CCC will back down.

The matter is expected to raise a head at Tuesday night’s meeting of the county committee in Ballybofey.
