FIVE MINUTES WITH… Declan Ward

Name: Declan Ward

Age: 22

Occupation:
Shop Assistant

Team: Naomh Muire

If you were throwing a party and you could invite anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would you ask around?
Probably Calvin Harris for the tunes and Kieran Tierney, I’d say he is some buzz at a party.

Where do you like to go out to celebrate after a big victory?
Been a while since we have been fit to do that but usually Sharkey’s Bar in Annagry, or Caislean Oir.

What’s the worst pitch you’ve ever played on? Has to be Dungloe’s pitch, such a bad hill.

Which character in any film are you most like?
Paul Blart Mall Cop.

Any odd items in your kit bag?
About five pairs of goalkeeper gloves just in case they all rip.

Who’s the biggest joker in the team you play for?
Brian Gillespie is up there along with Joey Gillespie, always messing about.

Which team mate has the best looking other half?
To be fair most of the lads are single so they’d need to sort that out before we could answer that.

Who is the worst/best trainer?
Worst would be Cian Boyle, he has hamstrings made of glass. Best would be Adam O’Brien when he shows up. Man can run all day.

Who spends most time in front of the mirror in the dressing room?
Either Ultan Boyle or Joey Gillespie. Ronan Duffy enjoys checking himself out on the zoom calls this weather too.

Who’s the best/worst person to sit beside on the team bus?
Best would be Ultan Boyle, he always has food with him. Worst is probably Duke the kitman, he can chat for Ireland when sometimes you just want to listen to music.

Who has the best and who has the worst diet on the team, and what does it include?
Best I would say is Daniel Ward, flat out eating Turkey Mince and all that carry on. I could be up there for worst, love a Chinese.

Toughest opponent you have faced?
Played against loads of good players but one who stood out is Aaron Doherty from Glen, he can use both feet and could play anywhere on pitch.

Best or worst quote you’ve heard, either from a manager, player, opponent?
Ben Boyle said: “You could be down 2-0 and win the game 3-1, it is the cup after all”. We all got laugh out of that.

Best manager you’ve ever played under?
In terms of leadership and motivation, would have to be Sean Paul Barrett.

Best ever performance?
None really stand out, but think I did decent in last year’s championship. Only conceded one goal in five games and chipped in with a couple of points from 45’s and free-kicks.

One to forget? Probably playing Aodh Ruadh Ballyshannon in 2019 Championship quarter final. We got beat well that day, but improved against them last year and will hopefully be even better this year.

Sporting ambition?
To win the Intermediate championship with Naomh Muire.

When you were playing in the back garden, who did you pretend to be?
Usually pretended to be Shay Given or Artur Boruc. I looked up to them.

If you were in charge of transfers, who’d be in and who’d be out of the team?
Transfers in to team would be Michael Murphy and Brian Fenton, Think I’d keep all the lads there now, we have a good young team that can hopefully improve over next few years.
