LETTERKENNY Roads Policing Unit have issued a warning to motorists via social media after a surge of drink and drug driving incidents over the weekend.
On Saturday night a driver was arrested on suspicion on drink driving, and another for drug driving.
On Sunday Gardaí arrested three drivers on suspicion of drug driving.
A garda spokesperson said, “If you drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you are putting your life and the lives of other road users at risk. It is that simple.
“Call a taxi. Call a family member or friend. There is always a way to get home, a safe way. Do the right thing.”
Across Ireland, 2023 was the worst year for road deaths in almost a decade with 188 people losing their lives on the road. This year, 128 people have already died in collisions. It is estimated that 37% of all road deaths in Ireland are drink related.
