Fishermen fear deterioration could lead to pier’s closure

By Róise Collins

FISHERMEN from Portnablagh are calling for urgent improvements to the local pier, amid growing concerns that continued deterioration could eventually lead to its closure.

Led by Ivan McElhinney, the fishermen voiced their concerns during a presentation to local councillors at Monday’s meeting of Glenties Municipal District. They highlighted the need for minor but essential repairs, including the installation of a breakwater, to protect the structure.

The main pier, built in 1848, was last repaired over 30 years ago. With the structure now showing signs of wear, fishermen fear that another major storm could render the pier unusable, leaving them without a base for their work and putting their livelihoods at risk.

“We think it will cost less to fix it now than if another storm comes,” Mr McElhinney told the chamber.

In addition to structural issues, Mr McElhinney raised concerns about congestion on the pier, which he said is making access increasingly difficult for local fishermen.

Parked cars, a sauna, water sports businesses and a coffee dock are all contributing to limited space on the slipway, affecting both departure and return with their catch.

“It can be really frustrating trying to make your week’s wages. Every day counts for us, and access can be hard,” he said.

Council spokesperson Noel Breslin, who is involved in pier maintenance, acknowledged the challenges, noting the number of piers under the council’s remit and the limited funding available for repairs.

He agreed to provide new signage and to assist the fishermen in applying for departmental funding.

Mr Breslin also suggested creating a harbour users group to improve communication and coordination among all those using the pier facilities.
