THE first girls have been enrolled to start in Scoil Cholmcille next September.

The historic signings took place last Tuesday and in a statement, The Board of Management of Scoil Cholmcille said it was delighted to officially announce that it will be enrolling girls for all classes, from Junior Infants right through to sixth class beginning September 2018.

Up to 10 girls have already enrolled for next year.

“The school will cease being a single sex primary education provider and will progress to a co-educational model on September 1 2018. This follows a three-year consultation phase between the Board of Management and the Patron, the school staff and parents of Scoil Cholmcille,” said the school.

This will be the first time in 124 years, since the school was established in 1894, that families who have brothers already in the school or who have siblings at the neighbouring Loreto Convent and St. Eunan’s College, will be able to enrol boys and girls at Scoil Cholmcille.

“One of the driving forces behind the change was parents’ preference to be able to have the choice of the same English speaking primary school for both their sons and daughters as well as having the convenience of the one drop off and same school closures,” the board said.

An open day will take on Saturday January 20 from noon to 2pm.

“This will be a great opportunity to meet the hard working staff, enjoy the school’s parent and pupil friendly atmosphere and learn about the many diverse and educational experiences provided at Scoil Cholmcille,” the board said.

“Scoil Cholmcille has established itself as a primary school that provides an excellent caring environment, strong in motivating pupils to learn and ensures that parents are welcomed and actively involved in their child’s progress. Together we can make a difference,” the statement read.

While the school is now taking enrolments for September, a formal enrolment day takes place in the school on Thursday, February 8, starting at 10am.
