TRANSPORT Minister Hildegarde Naughton has used an event at Atlantic University in Letterkenny to announce a crackdown on rogue drivers.
Minister Naughton intends to table legislation that will see fines for speeding, no seatbelt and driving while using a phone double.
Anyone caught speeding will have to pay €160 as opposed to the old tariff of €80 while no seatbelt and phone use will carry a penalty of €120.
Five people have died on Donegal’s roads already this year.
“I am gravely concerned about the high number of deaths on our roads this year,” Minister Naughton told those gathered.
“We need to act now to stem this increase. Accordingly I intend to double the fines for key road traffic offences which are putting drivers, pedestrians and cyclists most at risk of death on our roads.”
