Fined for shouting abuse at preacher at Letterkenny’s Market Square

A Letterkenny man who shouted abuse at a male preacher has been fined at the local District Court.

Arthur Gent, with an address at Lui na Greine, Oldtown, was charged with threatening and abusive behaviour and with refusing to comply with the directions of a Garda.

Gardaí had been alerted to the scene at the Market Square on Saturday, July 13 last where the defendant was reported to have been acting in an aggressive manner.

They were about to leave the area when Gent began shouting at a male preacher: ‘What the f…are you talking about?.”

The defendant was given directions to leave the area but when he didn’t comply he was arrested.

The court heard that he had two previous convictions relating to traffic matters.

Sergeant Gerard Dalton said a large number of people were present when the incident occurred.

Defending solicitor, Frank Dorrian said it was more of an argument than a public order offence.

Imposing a fine of €250, Judge Éiteáin Cunningham said this did not excuse the defendant acting aggressively.
