Fine Gael MEP Nina Carberry visits Donegal

MEP Nina Carberry visited Donegal yesterday, where she met with key fishing industry representatives in Killybegs alongside Senator Manus Boyle.

The discussions focused on critical challenges facing the sector, including quotas, the ongoing impact of Brexit on Irish fisheries, and concerns over the unsustainable practices of Norwegian vessels in European waters.

As part of her visit, MEP Carberry toured the Atlantic Dawn Group facilities, one of the region’s leading fishing and seafood processing companies. She praised Killybegs for its innovation and commitment to sustainability, highlighting how the region has become a leader in responsible fishing practices and seafood processing.

MEP Carberry also met with local Fine Gael members in Letterkenny, where she was joined by Senator Nikki Bradley. Discussions centred on regional priorities and ongoing political developments affecting Donegal and the wider northwest.

Speaking after her visit, MEP Carberry emphasised the importance of ensuring regional voices are heard at the European level.

“Donegal’s fishing industry is a cornerstone of the local economy and a way of life for so many families. It’s vital that their voices are heard and represented in Brussels, particularly as we navigate post-Brexit challenges and ongoing threats from foreign overfishing.

“I will continue to push for fairer policies that protect Irish fishers and ensure a sustainable future for our coastal communities.”

She also reaffirmed her commitment to working closely with colleagues in Europe and in the Dáil to ensure the north west remains a priority in policy discussions.

“It’s not just about fighting for Donegal in Brussels, it’s about making sure we have a strong, unified voice at every level. I will continue to work alongside my European colleagues and Fine Gael representatives in the Dáil to ensure that the north west gets the attention and investment it deserves.”
