Film shot in Donegal now available to rent

SPEARS, the movie thriller from Donegal director Gerard Lough, is now available to rent for the first time in Ireland.

Packed with twists and turns, the plot kicks off with a private investigator is sent from Donegal to Italy to track down a woman who mysteriously vanished there. Meanwhile in London a dissident republican does an arms deal with a new seller he does not trust. In Berlin, a scam artist spends a weekend with a married woman he tries to convince to leave with him. Each of the three men make a startling discovery which forces them to team up back in Ireland and take revenge on those who have wronged them.

Over half of the film was shot in Donegal with the rest of filming taking place in Florence, Berlin and London. Locations that should be familiar to local viewers include Rathmullan House, Florence Cafe, Killybegs and Slieve League.

Spears was part of a recent slate of films shot in the county that included The Northman, Wildfire and the Paul Mescal drama God’s Creatures.

Gerard Lough said, “Last year was a banner year for Irish film and I’m delighted that Spears both played a part in it and will now find a wide audience after a limited cinema release that happened at a time when folks were a little hesitant to go to the movies.

Rebecca Rose Flynn at Maghery Waterfall, one of the locations used as the backdrop for Spears.

“Being an independent film, it also proves that there is now no better time for local film-makers to get behind a camera and tell a story that is more personal or distinctive than mainstream fare, if that’s what they want to do.”

Among the cast of Spears is busy Donegal actor Aidan O’Sullivan who recently appeared in The Quiet Girl.

Of those he worked with, Gerard Lough added, “The cast of Spears was the best I have ever worked with. Each of the seven principal actors are potential break out stars and I have no doubt we are going to be seeing more of them on screen in the years to come. After a preview screening, their performances were one of the most talked about aspects of the film.”
