Festival visitors will get to explore the beautiful scenery of Malin Head.
TWENTY-seven filmmakers from 15 countries will converge on Malin village for the Guth Gafa International Film Festival this month.
The festival, which has put down new roots in Inishowen after a successful six-year residency in Gortahork, is taking place this year year in collaboration with the Derry -Londonderry, City of Culture.
Over the course of the weekend of 16-19 May, five state-of-the -art cinemas will be created on and around Malin’s 17th century village green and the population will swell to at least 20 times its normal size.
30 films about musical genius, human fragility, isolated communities fighting for survival and hope in the depths of pain will be screened.
Audiences will be taken on a virtual world tour to locations as varied as Switzerland, Israel, Azerbaijan, Africa, India and Cambodia and to places as wildly contrasting as a North Korean labour camp and a remote village in the Arctic Circle.
Guth Gafa is unique in encouraging so many film makers to attend, giving audiences an opportunity to discuss the work formally after the film and informally at the various social gatherings throughout the weekend.
A first this year will be a giant LED screen in the village green that will show music themed films on Friday and Saturday night including the acclaimed I’m Your Man documentary on the legendary singer songwriter, Leonard Cohen.
Guth Gafa has also become a hotbed for discussion, a forum for young filmmakers and a social gathering where audiences will be entertained by some of the county’s and country’s finest musicians.
As part of its partnership with Derry-Londonderry City of Culture 2013, a series of satellite film and film related events will take place in Derry.
