General Election: Fifth seat to  come down to Pringle and Ward

by Louise Doyle

THE 100% Redress Party candidate in Donegal has spoken of his surprise on learning the fifth seat in this constituency could come down to himself and outgoing Independent TD Thomas Pringle.

Gavan Reilly, political correspondent with Virgin Media, made the prediction as the final tallies in Donegal were concluding, with Mr Ward on 8.8 per cent of the vote, and Mr Pringle on 6.9 per cent.

“It’s not even worth thinking about because Thomas Pringle is the only person I would vote for. He is a good man. I respect him and what he has done. I hope it doesnt come down to that,  but if we don’t get to the next level it is over,” Mr Ward told the Donegal News.

A defective concrete blocks homeowner, Mr Ward said he was disappointed he didnt poll greater in parts of Inishowen.

“We wanted to be stronger but people are going in the other direction with what SInn Féin has promised. My campaign is to be a voice.

“We’re forgotten about here in Donegal, and it’s important to stand up and acknowledge there is a crisis going on here, and we are not getting help.

“Sixty houses in five years is now a good scheme in place.

“I am not going to predict anything but we have given everything we have to this. I couldnt have done any more.

“In our party bank we had 1,500 euros and we had to fundraise to do everything possible. I worked night and day. We’re just ordinary people who are standing up,” said the healthcare worker.

Although the 100% Redress Party did very well in the local elections earlier this year, Mr Ward said he will be disappointed if that success is not mirrored in the general election.

Dail Éireann is where the teeth are. I have a plan, and this is it now. If I don’t cross the line I can’t use that plan.

“My worry is that in a decade we’ll still be in this shambles if we don’t have a voice in Dáil Eireann.”
