Fianna Fáil to select candidates tonight

by Kate Heaney

THE Fianna Fáil selection convention to choose the candidates to contest the next General Election in Donegal takes place in the Clanree Hotel this evening.

So far, three of the six nominees have dropped out – Senator Niall Blaney, Ben Harkin and Cllr Donal Mandy Kelly, all having issued statements wishing the three remaining candidates Charlie McConalogue, Pat the Cope Gallagher and Cllr Michael Naughton – well.

There was some speculation yesterday that by the time the convention gets underway tonight, Cllr Naughton may also have dropped out to leave a clear run for veteran politician Pat the Cope Gallagher in Donegal South and sitting Fianna Fáil Agriculture Minister in Donegal North with a simple two candidate strategy.

A major cavalcade protest is planned by the 100% Redress Party to coincide with the party convention.

Cars, lorries and tractors will drive from the Polestar Roundabout to the Manor Roundabout at the end of the dual carriageway in a constant loop.

It is due to start this evening at 4.30pm.

The Fianna Fáil convention voting is to be between 6pm and 9pm.

The statements from all three nominees who have stepped down give various reasons, but stress their full support for the party.

Senator Blaney cites the critical importance of having a Donegal man at the heart of government in the Cabinet in order to secure future infrastructure projects for the county.

Cllr Kelly gives his reason for withdrawal as he is “not at the moment in a strong enough position to make it through what is going to be a very tough convention.”

Termon Ógra member Ben Harkin stated in his notice of withdrawal: “It was a great honour to get nominated to be a potential general election candidate by Fianna Fáil members in Donegal. However, I wouldn’t wish to contest against a sitting Minister, Charlie McConalogue who has delivered so much for Donegal, and our farmers and fisheries.”

According to a party source, there are up to 900 party members in the county who may cast their votes.

In an internal party memo, members were told to bring their ID or party membership card.
