A WEEK long festival of events is set to held in Downings this summer to coincide with the return of the Irish Legends Golf Tournament.
The Irish Legends Golf Tournament presented by The Paul McGinley Foundation is being held in the Rosapenna Hotel and Golf Resort from August 16 to 20 with a major festival planned to coincide with the event.
The tournament returns to Downings for the second year having been held last year without spectators due to Covid-19 restrictions.
The proposed festival will include live music and entertainment on Friday and Saturday night with the headline acts expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
The Council is also engaging with Donegal Food Coast as well as local businesses to set up a bespoke Donegal Food village during both the tournament and the festival providing a strong authentic Donegal Events in Downings.
A spokesperson for the Council said, “The team are also working closely with the local community in Downings, including the local GAA club and Tidy Town Committee in making arrangements for the event as well as with the Councils Environment team to ensure that the event is as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible.
“An upcoming meeting is planned with other local service providers including the Councils Roads Team, An Garda Síochána and Civil Defence in the coming weeks.
“A Communications and Marketing Plan is currently being prepared and this will work hand in hand with the marketing activities of the Irish Legends Tournament.”
Cllr Liam Blaney has been leading the call for a festival to be held during the golf tournament and at Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD he asked for the councillors to be informed of the plans and progress in organising the week long festival.
Cllr Liam Blaney said last year’s event was very enjoyable but spectators were not allowed due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Cllr Blaney welcomed the update and he is hopeful this year’s event will be bigger and better.
“It was a very enjoyable weekend and experience for everyone who came to the area and it is great to see it making a return for the second time.
“Hopefully we will get the weather this year again and this festival will be a great boost to Downings and the surrounding areas,” Said Cllr Blaney.
