FÉILE Róise Rua is set to take place from Friday, May 19 to Sunday, May 21 on Árainn Mhór Island.
Féile Róise Rua was set up in 2018 as a voluntary community based festival to revive the local music and song tradition on the island, in particular the music of local singer and song collector Róise Rua, Róise na nÁmhrán.
The festival is run as a social enterprise with all profits from the event going into community projects on Árainn Mhór.
This year’s festival will include exclusive performances from some of the finest Irish and folk artists including Síle Denvir, Ciarán Ó Gealbháin, Zoé Basha,
Tara Conaghan, Seán Gavin, Edwina Guckian, Peter Crann, and film showings and talks from acclaimed director Pat Collins and from Richie Piggott.
This is no ordinary festival, Féile Róise Rua is a unique Donegal festival experience on the Wild Atlantic Way.
Visitors, singers and music lovers get an authentic experience as they immerse themselves in island life for this special weekend.
There will be song and music sessions in all the pubs, a céilí, a concert, talks, workshops, film showing and island tours.
This year as part of the festival preparation artist residencies took place to allow artists to spend time in Árainn Mhór sharing their talents in dance, film, song, art and music while also gaining knowledge from local people.
An island based youth media group will document the festival along with the talented filmmaker Louise Gaffney.
Philip King, founder of Other Voices, said as John Berger says “songs can express the inner experience of being and becoming” and at Féile Róise Rua on Arranmore Island with songs and singing, tradition, translation and transmission at the heart of the festival, that’s exactly what happens.
Féile Róise Rua is proud to support the development of the arts and support community initiatives on Árainn Mhór.
This year the festival will be raising money to support Ionad an Chrois Bhealaigh to upgrade facilities and enable more music and arts events to take place for the benefit of the community.
The festival is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, Ealaín na Gaeltachta and Donegal County Council and Plean Teanga Árainn Mhór.
