THE annual New Year’s Day swim takes place at Ballyhiernan Bay (Dins shore), Fanad at 2pm.
The swim has been going strong for over 25 years and has helped raise much needed funds for both local charities as well as the Don Bosco Educational Projects in Johannesburg, South Africa, under the direction of Sr Margaret Sweeney (Salesian Sister).
The Don Bosco Educational Projects help by educating children who are so often marginalised, including migrants, refugees and orphans, who may not have the necessary documentation to attend government schools. The swim money goes towards feeding, clothing and educating the most vulnerable.
This year the money will be divided between the Don Bosco Projects and Pieta House.
Pieta house is Ireland’s suicide prevention charity, offering free professional, confidential support for people in suicidal crisis, those self-harming and those bereaved by suicide, through therapy, a 24/7 helpline, and text service, focusing on building resilience and providing hope.
