THERE is great excitement building around the Fanad pensinsula as the community rallies around the opening of the visitor facility at Fanad Lighthouse.

A date has been set for the establishment of a community based company to oversee the management of the facility which opens in May 2015.

This company limited by guarantee will work in partnership with the Commissioners of Irish Lights and manage the facility which will include tower tours, with a decision on the management of the accommodation yet to be made.

Coiste Forbartha Theach Solais Fhánada confirmed that Gearoid Ó Maonaigh of Donegal Local Development Company Ltd will make a presentation to the Fanad community on the roles and responsibilities of persons involved in a company limited by guarantee on Thursday, September 11, in the Ionad Lae Day Centre in Traigh a Locha.

Mr Ó Maonaigh will be available to answer any questions on the night and he has kindly agreed to return to the ionad on September 18 to facilitate the formation of the community company on the night and appoint directors to the company.

There will also be an opportunity at this meeting, which is open to the public, to simply show your support for the project by becoming a member of the company.

Mr Niall Blaney, Coiste Forbartha Theach Solais Fhánada PRO, said there was great excitement building, not only around the lighthouse project, but the whole community.

“The footfall has increased significantly this summer, not just at the lighthouse, but around the whole peninsula, so hopefully the development of Fanad Lighthouse can have a wider positive affect on the whole community of Fanad.

“The architect has been working with the Irish Lights Commission and plans for accommodation at the lighthouse are very much on course for next year. They are working very hard to have accommodation up-and-running for the summer,” he said.

Mr Blaney said Fáilte Ireland is working on developing a Visitor Attraction Centre in the vicinity of the lighthouse. “I think the wider community is seeing the potential growth in tourism and this could support the wider business community, from B&Bs to shops.

“There is also great potential for a youth hostel; the area is crying out loud one and the are people looking into the possibility of this at the moment,” he said.

The Lighthouse Development Committee would like to remind the Fanad community of the documentation outlining the roles and responsibilities of the community company.

This document provides a standardised memorandum and articles of association for a company limited by guarantee. Copies of the memorandum are available in the local post offices and shops, online via our face book page Fanad Lighthouse, Cionn Fhánada, through the revenue.ie website or by directly using the following link http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/forms/stanmemo.pdf.
