A Spokesperson for Revenue confirmed that they seized 7,200 cigarettes, 1kg of tobacco and the vehicle in which the contraband was transported.

“The combined value of the seized tobacco product is €4,440, representing a loss to the Exchequer of €3,575,” said a Revenue spokesperson.

“These seizures are part of Revenue’s on going operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes and alcohol in the shadow economy.

“If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes, tobacco or alcohol, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.”

Last year nationally Revenue convicted 18 criminals, referred 14 cases to the Director of Public Prosecutions and had 108 ongoing investigations.

They had 30 cases before the courts and over €2 million in fines were imposed by Revenue in 2016.
