Extremely busy weekend for Gardaí in Donegal

IT was a very busy weekend for An Garda Síochána with close to seventy arrests made up to yesterday evening as thousands of visitors flocked to the county for the 51st Donegal International Rally.

A significant policing plan including air support and additional Garda resources from the North Western Region and National Units was rolled out over the weekend.

There were over 60 arrests on Friday and Saturday alone.

There were 18 arrests on Friday when the three-day event officially got underway and a further 42 arrests on Saturday.

When the Donegal News went to press last night there had been eight further arrests made.

Minor public order offences made up the majority of offences, explained Garda Sergeant Eunan Walsh.

The rest of the arrests were made up of road traffic offences, intoxicated driving, drugs and assaults.

In a one-hour period yesterday afternoon twelve drivers were issued with Fixed Charge Penalty Notices by Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit on the dual carriageway for the offence of speeding.
