Extremely busy weekend at emergency department

ALMOST 340 patients attended Letterkenny University Hospital’s Emergency Department between Bank Holiday Monday and yesterday.

The hospital is also currently managing a Covid-19 outbreak which is affecting one ward.

Figures provided to the Donegal News show 128 people attended LUH’s emergency department on bank Holiday Monday.

There were 159 attendances on Tuesday.

As we were going to press yesterday there were 52 patients in the emergency department.

A hospital spokesperson told the Donegal News all available beds in the hospital are in use and forewarned of lengthy waiting times in the emergency department.

“Patients are facing long waiting times to be admitted from the Emergency Department to a bed on a ward. Every effort is being made to discharge patients who are ready to go home so that beds will become available for patients who need to be admitted, at the earliest opportunity.”

Meanwhile, 33 patients were on trolleys at LUH yesterday, according to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO).

Thirty patients were on trolleys on Tuesday, according to the figures.
