Extra-time disappointment for Harps in Cup replay

Dundalk 3-1 Finn Harps (AET)

There was disappointment for Finn Harps at Oriel Park this evening as Dundalk defeated them in extra-time in their FAI Cup quarter-final replay.

Sean Boyd’s late double on Friday forced a replay, and the big striker was rewarded with a starting berth tonight.

It took Boyd just six minutes to hit the net when he controlled Barry McNamee’s pass and fired into the net.

Harps were the better team in the first half but a nervous Dundalk drew level in the 39th minute when Sean Murray scored.

Harps came close to regaining the lead in the 64th minute but Boyd’s header came off the post and Dundalk goalkeeper Peter Cherrie saved Tunde Owolabi’s follow up header.

Neither side forced a chance of substance after that and it was no great surprise that the match went to extra-time.

Hoban went close twice in the additional time before Dundalk were awarded a penalty when Dave Webster was adjudged to have fouled Sami Ben Amar.

Webster wasn’t happy but Hoban stayed calm and slotted the spot-kick into the corner.

Dundalk then moved 3-1 in front in the 105th minute when Michael Duffy scored a stunning free-kick.

Harps ran out of steam in the second half of extra-time and Dundalk progress through to the FAI semi-finals.
