Extra staff secured for Glenveagh as visitors soar

EXTRA staff and extended worker contracts for Glenveagh National Park has been confirmed as visitor numbers soar at the popular tourist attraction.

The decision was made by Minister for Arts and Culture Heather Humphreys TD (FG) following representations from Donegal TD Joe McHugh (FG) who met with staff last month.

Minister McHugh said: “Last year saw a record number of visitors to Glenveagh to 176,444 and so far this year until the end of June there have been 94,809. Having spoken to staff it was clear that additional resources were needed and I am delighted that an extra permanent visitor guide and an extra bus driver have now been appointed. The contracts of two seasonal gardeners have also been extended by two months.”

Minister McHugh said tourism is becoming a “key driver” for the economy in Donegal and that it is wonderful to see Glenveagh attracting so many new visitors. He thanked Minister Humphreys for acting so promptly in adding new staff and extending working hours.

Cathaoirleach of Letterkenny Municipal District Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh paid tribute to the staff at Glenveagh.

Cllr Kavanagh said: “Like so many people working in our expanded tourism industry the staff at Glenveagh help to provide a warm visitor experience to the people who are coming to see our wonderful county in ever increasing numbers. “With the increasing visitors this year it is already looking like 2017 will be another record-breaking year for Glenveagh.”
