External Gynaecologist and manager brought in at LUH

AN EXTERNAL gynaecologist and a senior manager have been drafted in to lead changes at Letterkenny University Hospital’s Gynaecology Department following a review into the safety and quality of its services.

It comes as whistleblower, Bristol based Consultant , Dr Margaret MacMahon, who campaigned tirelessly for the review following the death of her sister, had a telephone meeting with HSE Chief Executive, Paul Reid last week. She said she has also been contacted by London based, Sir Ciarán Devane who is Chair of the Health Service Executive Board – the governing body of the HSE, set up last year in a bid to rebuild public trust in the service.

Dr MacMahon has taken on the role as advocate for some of the families involved in order to get answers following the allegations of delays in cancer diagnoses at LUH. The review is due to be published in the last week of August and it is understood that the National Oversight Group will be overseeing the Gynaecology Department at LUH in order to ensure that various recommendations are being implemented.

Speaking to the Donegal News this week Dr MacMahon said: “This is only the beginning.”

Responding to a query from this newspaper a Spokesperson for Saolta Health Care Group said: “An external Obstetrician/Gynaecologist and a senior manager from within the Saolta Group have been providing some support to the Gynaecology service in LUH over the last number of weeks.”
