NESTLED in the heart of Kilmacrennan village, the newly opened O’Donnell’s MACE store has quickly found itself at the heart of the community, becoming a standout destination for locals and passers-by alike.
Owned by Gavin O’Donnell, whose family have been at the heart of local retail for 40 years with service stations in both Crolly and Illistrin, the O’Donnell name has been the watch-word for trust in Donegal retail, expanding into Kilmacrennan last year with their usual trademark dedication and high standards.
Kilmacrennan’ s one-stop shop received a major revamp inside and out, espousing quality, convenience, and community at its heart.
Gavin has transformed the new premises into more than a place to pick up essentials, offering comfort, quality food, improved services and a warm community welcome to all who enter.

Following months of work, MACE Kilmacrennan is an inviting, well-designed environment offering a wide range of services and upgrades designed to make life easier.
The new premises offers a brand new hot and cold deli; a modern coffee unit serving Insomnia Coffee, including iced coffee; a bright, spacious sit-down café offering free Wi-Fi, with accessible bathrooms and baby-changing facilities; a 24-hour self-service laundrette, a deposited return recycling machine and a Smooch Ice Cream outlet.
Further improvements down the line will include a full service off license, a modern 24 hour GO service station and car wash.
Explaining his reasons for expansion, Gavin said, “When the opportunity came to invest in Kilmacrennan, we knew we could bring something special to the area, with our strong focus on service and local needs, between retail, fuel and home heating oil.
“Since the recent renovation, the store has seen a remarkable increase in footfall, with both loyal customers and new faces coming through the doors. The support and feedback from Kilmacrennan and surrounding areas has been incredible since our renovation.”
Having operated in Illistrin for the past five years, Gavin has got to know many customers prior to the expansion.
“Our Illistrin site has been consistently busy. It shows that competitive pricing and a modern service can make a real difference and this is what we will bring to Kilmacrennan,” he said.
Fully refurbished with an experienced and friendly team and backing from trusted brands, Gavin believes MACE Kilmacrennan is set to remain a key part of the community for years to come.
“We’re proud to serve Kilmacrennan and the surrounding communities; to keep improving, listening to our customers, and offering everything they need, right here in their village.”
