THE Raphoe man who escaped from prison on Thursday while serving a seven year sentence for killing Garda Gary McLaughlin, was recaptured in Derry this morning (Friday).
Martin McDermott (26) had been serving his sentence in the open prison Loughan House in County Cavan when he absconded.
McDermott was sentenced last July for seven years for the manslaughter of Garda Gary McLoughlin in 2009 at Lisfannon, Burt.
He hit the patrol car Garda McLaughlin was driving after a high speed chase while being followed by other gardai. It emerged in court that McDermott had 91 previous convictions.
He was arrested by the PSNI in Derry at around 11am.
Police on both sides of the border were alerted along with security staff at ports and airports.
Questions are now being asked as to why the man who killed the on-duty garda was serving his sentence in an open prison described by one former prisoner as a “holiday camp”.
