THE ESB have confirmed they are taking a number of measures to prevent damage being done to power lines in the Inishowen area where householders have been experiencing power outages as a result of migrating birds.
In recent weeks, hundreds of whooper swans have been flocking daily to Inch Lake and surrounding fields near Burt after their long flight from their breeding grounds in Iceland. As they come in to land, some of the exhausted birds are hitting electricity cables in surrounding townlands.
A spokesperson for the ESB told the Donegal News that they are aware of the problem and have placed additional game guards (markers on the lines to make them more visible to birds) at locations where the strikes have occurred.
