Errigal College Triumphs in VEX Robotics Competition

In an electrifying display of engineering excellence, Errigal College’s robotics team clinched the top spot in the VEX Robotics North-West Regional Finals held at ATU Donegal on Wednesday, the 24th of January 2024.

The winning team (Gabriele, Rachel, Veronica, Josephine and Andrea) showcased exceptional skill and strategic thinking as their robot tackled a series of intricate challenges to outshine 12 other schools to secure the first place title and earn themselves a golden ticket to the national finals in Cork next month.

Engineering teacher, Mr Stephen Sweeney, was delighted with his students’ achievement at the competition. “I am incredibly proud of the dedication and hard work these students have put into the VEX Robotics competition. It’s a remarkable achievement for our school.”

Mr Danny Mc Fadden, principal of Errigal College, also expressed delight in the team’s victory, saying, “This win is not just about robotics; it reflects the overall commitment to STEM education in our school. Being the only school in the area offering engineering, we take great pride in nurturing such talent. This triumph is a testament to the quality of education and opportunities available here.”

VEX Robotics, a rapidly growing competitive robotics programme, challenges students to design, build, and program robots to perform specific tasks. It aims to inspire a passion for STEM education among students.

Transition year student, Andrea Noonan, shared her excitement about her team’s recent success and the prospect of representing her school on a global stage. “Winning 1st place feels absolutely amazing! The atmosphere at the regional event was intense, but we’re even more excited for the nationals. Knowing that the winners get to travel to Dallas, Texas, for the World Championships in June is mind-blowing! We’re hopeful, and we’re giving it our all. It’s a dream come true, and we’re ready to make our school proud.”

Wishing the team the best of luck in their upcoming endeavours, Mr Mc Fadden added, “The journey from the regional triumph to the national stage and, hopefully, the global platform in Texas is an exciting one. We believe in our students, and we are confident that they will continue to make us proud as they showcase their skills on the national stage”.
