SERIAL entrepreneur and globally successful Irish businessman, Peter Casey, is to stand for election to Seanad Éireann. He had previously considered contesting the general election in Donegal.

Mr Casey, founder and CEO of the global executive search company, Claddagh Resources, has secured Ibec’s nomination as a candidate on the Seanad’s Industrial and Commercial Panel.

“I am honoured and delighted to accept this nomination from the Irish Business and Employers Confederation as a candidate for election to the 25th Seanad”, the businessman said at his campaign launch in Dublin, outlining his agenda to support foreign direct investment, indigenous business development, and job creation.

“With business connections in the U.S. and globally, I have been, and will continue to be influential in getting companies to set-up in Ireland, bringing jobs and investment.

I also have practical experience from my own Irish business operations of what is needed to stimulate and support small business and the entrepreneurs who will drive economic recovery”, the Derry-born businessman said.

The need to incentivise companies to relocate to outer Dublin and rural Ireland is also a platform for Peter Casey, who believes there is an urgent need to address the concentration of commercial activity and the administration in central Dublin.

“There needs to be a refocusing on rural Ireland and surrounding Leinster counties.   We are driving up the cost of employment and living, and creating housing shortages and 3 hour daily commutes.  Tax breaks, rates concessions, and other incentives, alongside proper connectivity and infrastructure, is urgently needed to rebalance the distribution of commerce”, Peter Casey insists.

Known for his involvement on RTE’s Dragon’s Den series, Peter Casey considered standing as a general election candidate in Donegal, but held off on his ambitions for the Dáil, on account of his youngest child who is completing school in the U.S.   His daughter is hopeful of going to university in Ireland next September, at which stage the family will largely be based in Ireland.

Currently working between Atlanta, Donegal, and Dublin, the Irish entrepreneur believes he has something unique to offer, as a strong independent voice on returning Ireland to growth and prosperity.

“If elected to Seanad Éireann, I will be the only Irish Senator with a base in America.  I have direct access to some of the leading U.S. industrialists and business executives, and I will use that influence on Ireland’s behalf, to make a difference”.

Adding his guarantee to attend all sittings of the Seanad, at his own expense, Peter Casey says he has been successful in life and business, and believes it is time to give back.

“The combination of my business insights, my global contacts in major corporations, and my practical experience of rural Ireland and its need for jobs, services, and infrastructure, is driving me to see what can be done to effect change.  Combining business and political influence has to enhance the prospect of success,” Peter Casey explains.

One of nine children born in Derry, and a father of five, Peter Casey is married to Helen, a Dubliner, with bases in Atlanta and Ireland

A graduate in business and politics from Aston University in Birmingham, Peter Casey was recently recognised as one of Aston’s 50 Most Influential Alumni, and has been honoured as a leading Irish-American businessman by Irish-American Magazine.
