Mark English sealed the gold medal in the Men’s 800m at the National Senior Track and Field Championships at the Morton Stadium in Santry on Sunday evening.
It was a professional performance from the Finn Valley AC athlete who crossed the line in a time of 1:48.76, ahead of Cillian McPhillips in second and Andrew Thompson in third.
This was the Letterkenny man’s tenth 800m title at the National Senior Track and Field Championships and all bodes well for the upcoming World Athletics Championships which takes place next month in Tokyo, Japan.
Speaking after Sunday’s triumph, English stated that he was a little nervous coming into the 800m showpiece but he had a plan in place which worked out well for the Letterkenny native.
“It felt great. I was a little bit nervous coming into that race because it was a bunch of guys who trained together and I had to race them all so that was difficult. I had a plan and I executed that and it worked out.”
