Laga Harps U18 team
All Roads lead to McSharry Park, Sligo this Sunday February 28th, as Lagan Harps Under 18 team chase a National Cup crown. Brid McGinty’s team face Castlebar Celtic in the FAI Umbro Women’s Under 18 Cup final this weekend.
Lagan Harps gained their spot in the final when they previously defeated Douglas Hall and Castlebar Town.
McGinty’s side defeated Douglas Hall 5-0 in November, with Amy Boyd and Caoimhe Walsh both scoring two each and Amanda Callaghan also netting to seal the victory.
In the semi-final of the cup, Lagan met Douglas Hall again and trailed 2-1 at half-time. However, they were reinvigorated when they emerged for the second half and pulled of a superb comeback, winning the game 4-2.
“The semi final against Douglas Hall was rough; they went two nil up before our girls got settled into the game. We were 2-1 down at half time with the girls not playing well but they went out in second half and gave the performance of their lives. We can’t afford to give Castlebar an early lead on Sunday as it will be much tougher trying to catch up.” said McGinty.
Throughout the campaign, Lagan’s Caoimhe Walsh, Amy Boyd and Amanda Callaghan have been getting their names on the score sheet and will be aiming to be on target this Sunday again.
An the other end of the pitch, Aoife Page, Chantel Kelly and Zoe Green will be hoping to keep the backline secure. The Under 18s are in good hands as manager Brid Mc Ginty is assisted by Gabriel Crawford and Gerard McGarrigle who are no strangers to the Lagan sideline.
“Over the years Gaby Crawford, Gerard McGarrigle and I have put so much time into our underage structures at the club. Some of our players such as Ciana Brogan, Orla Friel, Aine Deasley all started playing with the club at the young age of six. We are really proud of all the girls. They have put in so much effort over the last few years and this is the reward they deserve.”
Orchard Park has been home to multiple success stories throughout the years as Lagan Harps have dominated the Donegal Women’s League and in 2014, the Lagan Harps senior ladies were crowned All Ireland Champions.
These success stories are set to encourage the current crop and this Sunday, they have a chance to add a piece of silverware to Lagan Harps’ already impressive collection.
