Carndonagh’s Labhaoise Clarke is on her way to Canada to represent Ireland in an upcoming competition in Ontario.

“I was over the moon when I got selected,” said Labhaoise.

“My mother texted me during school and told me I had been selected for the completion. I was full of excitement for the rest of the day with huge a smile on my face.

“My preparation for the competition is coming on great. It’s really tough training but for me to get to the top of my game I have to stick at it and work even harder than before.”

The bantamweight boxer is currently preparing for the competition with her local club, Carndonagh Boxing Club and is training six days a week to be in her best shape for the trip.

“I am really looking forward to meeting the Canadians and seeing what type of boxing is out there. I am looking forward to the overall experience, and most of all. going out to Canada with my teammates.”

Labhaoise is no stranger to representing Ireland as the boxer competed at the European Championships in Hungary last summer, and reached the quarter final but unfortunately missed out on the bronze medal. Labhaoise lost out when the fight went to a split decision and Keszethely, Ulabzsislave from Belarus was named the winner.

“The European Championships was incredible, meeting new people and seeing how they box. My fight out in Hungary was a really close fight and it could have gone either way. I was happy and I knew I couldn’t do anymore that day. My over all experience in Hungary was amazing and I can’t wait to go to Canada hopefully it will be better and hopefully I bring home a medal.”

While Labhaoise is busy preparing for the competition, the boxer is extremely appreciative of all the people who helped her get to where she is today. At the age of 16, Labhaoise Clarke is quickly becoming a name to look out for in Women’s boxing, an inspiration to young girls and will proudly represent her country in Canada.

“The support I have received has been amazing, you’re all amazing! And I particularly want to thank all my coach’s from Carndonagh ABC for putting their time and effort into coaching me throughout the years and many more to come.

“This is to everyone that wants to achieve something in their life – keep motivated ,keep your head down and aim high.”
