Chloe and Sam Magee
Ireland’s top badminton players are competing this week at the Welsh International Challenge in Cardiff. The event began on Wednesday November 25th and will run until Saturday November 28th.
Donegal’s Chloe Magee is competing in the women’s singles tournament and the mixed doubles tournament. Chloe’s niece Rachael Darragh is also competing in the women’s singles tournament, the mixed doubles and women’s doubles tournament. Sara Boyle completed the Irish women on the team. Boyle is competing in the single women’s tournament and the women’s doubles tournament.
Rachael Darragh and Sara Boyle entered the women’s single competition at the qualifying stages and were set the task of winning two matches to enter into the main draw. Unfortunately, neither of the two girls qualified for the main competition but quickly turned their attention to the women’s doubles tournament.
Boyle and Darragh paired up for the women’s doubles tournament on Thursday evening. The girls faced England’s Fee Teng Liew and Lizzie Tolman in their first pairing of the tournament and won 22-20 21-15. The pair received a walkover in their second game of the competition from Russia’s Ekaterina Bolotova and Evgeniya Kosetskaya.
Chloe Magee was in action in the mixed doubles with her brother and partner Sam Magee. The Raphoe pair got off to a winning start when they faced Chia Hao Lee and Chia Hsin Lee of China and won the match 21-15 21-15. On Friday morning, the Magee siblings continued their winning streak and defeated England’s Ryan Jing Quek and Meera Sivakumaran 21-17 21-10.
Rachael Darragh and Joshua Magee also competed in the mixed doubles tournament. In their first mixed doubles game of the tournament, the pair came out as 21-18 21-14 winners over Joshua Young and Grace Taylor of England. Early on Friday morning, the pair took to the court again and the Donegal pair easily defeated England’s Gregory Mairs and Jenny Moore 21-11 21-9.
On Thursday evening, Chloe Magee took to the court in the women’s singles tournament and defeated Martina Repiska 21-17 21-16. Magee, who is 6th seed in the tournament, faces Natalia Perminova in her second singles match of the tournament on Friday afternoon.
The event continues until Saturday with all three women with something to play for. Darragh and Boyle will be hoping to succeed in the women’s doubles tournament. Darragh is also still in the running with Joshua Magee for the mixed doubles tournament.
Chloe Magee will be hoping to pick up valuable Olympic qualifying points with mixed doubles partner Sam Magee, while also trying to win the women’s tournament.
