FORMER Fianna Fáil Minister Dr James McDaid said the success of the 100% Redress party candidates in Donegal is “frightening” for the Government parties.
The former TD offered his thoughts to the Donegal News earlier today as the tally figures indicated major support for Tomás Seán Devine in Letterkenny and his party colleagues Joy Beard and Ali Farren in Inishowen.
Between them, Beard and Farren have polled over 2,200 votes, according to the tallies.
“The mica people, in fairness to them, they have stood up and the people have backed them.” Dr. McDaid said after the boxes in Inishowen, Letterkenny and almost all in Milford were tallied.
“I’m just wondering, what’s the Government going to do in the General Election if this is the situation in the local election.”
He said defective concrete block campaigners need to be supported financially by government, but pointed out that the problems might be finding young people to build the new homes.
He said when it comes to the General Election, places Clare, Limerick, Galway, Sligo and Donegal have a lot of power added to them as a result of these local elections.
“It’s a frightening situation for the Government now, and frightening is the word,” he said.
“There hasn’t been anything like this before, what has happened in Inishowen and what is happening in Letterkenny.
“You have two candidates who have currently over 2,200 votes between them in the Inishowen area, you’re going to have to listen to it.”
