EIRCOM engineers are to visit the island of Aranmore today to assess the damage caused by the recent stormy weather.
A spokesperson for eircom confirmed that two engineers were visiting the island where they would restore as many phone services as possible.
“The engineers will assess the situation first; we don’t know how much damage was caused by the storm, but they will repair as many lines as possible while they are out there.”
Earlier in the week members of the island community had expressed their concern and frustration at the delay of getting the phone line service repaired.
By New Year’s Eve some households, as well as public phone services, had been out of action for nine days over the whole Christmas holiday period.
Well-known island businessman, Jerry Early said while most people had mobiles these days, his concern was more for the elderly and sick people in the community.
“The phone line to the day centre was down so no one could contact the clinic, while the alarm systems and panic buttons for the elderly were also affected. Restoring phones and systems for the elderly and health services should have been made a priority.
“They definitely have to learn from this, eircom must have a more cohesive plan in place as nine days without a phone service is just not good enough.” he said.
